The Building
The Aorere Museum of Art is housed within the former Collingwood Post Office, a Category 1 heritage building that has stood at the heart of the township for more than a century. Once a place of communication, exchange, and connection for the people of Mohua, the building now continues that role in another form — carrying the voices, visions, and stories of artists connected to this land.
The transition from post office to art museum reflects a continuity of purpose: from the transmission of messages to the transmission of culture, memory, and artistic expression.
Overlooking the Aorere River and the waters of Golden Bay, the building has been carefully restored as a place for art, contemplation, and community gathering. Historic architectural details remain throughout, now sitting in dialogue with modernist and contemporary works from Aotearoa and beyond.
