The Aorere Museum of Art holds works of national significance, bringing together modernism and abstraction, landscape photography, and spiritually resonant art rooted in the natural world.
Paintings, prints, drawings, photography, ceramics and sculptures by artists from Aotearoa / New Zealand are presented alongside international voices. Their conversation unfolds across eleven rooms and a contemplative sculpture garden.
The Aorere Museum of Art is housed within the former Collingwood Post Office, a Category 1 heritage building that has stood at the heart of the township for more than a century. Once a place of communication, exchange, and connection for the local gold mining community, the building now continues that role in another form — carrying the voices, visions and inspirations of artists from Aotearoa / New Zealand.
The transition from post office to art museum reflects a continuity of purpose: from the transmission of messages to the transmission of culture, memory, and artistic expression.
From 2025 - 2026 the building has been carefully restored, while still retaining it’s historical features - including post boxes, the gold hatch, Matai wooden floors and multiple fireplaces.
